Fighting Diabetes

About the Canadian Diabetes Association

Across the country, the Canadian Diabetes Association is leading the fight against diabetes by helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while they work to find a cure. They are supported in their efforts by a community-based network of volunteers, employees, healthcare professionals, researchers and partners. By providing education and services, advocating on behalf of people with diabetes, supporting research and translating research into practical applications – they are delivering on their mission.

For 55 years, the Association has provided leadership in raising the profile of diabetes, improving the lives of those living with the disease, providing essential information to those at risk and accelerating the search for a cure through the funding of world-class research.

With a presence in hundreds of communities in Canada, their Public Programs & Services teams deliver innovative, quality programs and services that support, empower and motivate people to adopt healthier lifestyles leading to improved prevention and management of diabetes. The public programs and services include summer camps for children and their families living with type 1 diabetes, community education presentations and expos as well as educational programs for children and youth.

Camp Huronda

Summer camp for children living with type 1 diabetes can mean the difference between dependence and independence at a tender age when the world is waiting to be explored.

Owned and operated by the Canadian Diabetes Association, Camp Huronda lies on a beautifully wooded peninsula on Lake Waseosa near Huntsville. This superb 110-acre setting offers permanent camp facilities for children living with type 1 diabetes through carefully planned day and evening programs that provide children with a summer of adventure, fun, activities, new skills and healthcare. It is at camp where most children learn about the self-management of their disease, learn to inject their insulin for the first time and meet other children dealing with the same issues.

The camp offers four two-week sessions in July and August for 8–15 year olds, as well as two one-week sessions for 8-10 year olds in August. For the sixth summer, Huronda will also host a four-day Family Camp at the end of August.

This summer, Camp Huronda will also proudly celebrate its 40th Anniversary on Lake Waseosa!
